His net worth and wealth have been the source of much discussion and misconception. He has famously refused to release his tax statements since being elected despite his promises to the contrary prior to taking office. Well known for many decades as a wealthy real estate tycoon, many wonder is Trump on the Forbes List? Yes, Trump is on the Forbes List but what does that mean exactly? When has Trump been on the Forbes List? Influential business magazine Forbes began publishing its list of the world’s 400 wealthiest individuals in 1982. Known as the Forbes List or Forbes 400, obtaining one of these rankings is a coveted and envied position only experienced the most elite people. Born into wealth and privilege, Donald Trump and his father were featured as a duo in the very first Forbes List.  Donald Trump first made the list solo  in 1985. He remained on the list for several more years until 1990. That year, Forbes published a shocking article in which it was revealed that a “decline in Atlantic City gaming revenues, unmasking of misstated asset values, declining real estate values and massive debt may have put The Donald within hailing distance of zero.” Furthermore, Fortune Magazine has since stated that “a former Forbes reporter says that President Donald Trump lied to him in order to make the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans, including impersonating an aide who didn’t exist to claim wealth he didn’t have.” “The reporter, Jonathan Greenberg, says that over time he learned that Trump shouldn’t have appeared on the lists at all. For instance, in his first appearance on the Forbes 400 in 1982, Trump is listed as having $100 million when he was actually worth around $5 million at the time, according to documents that later came to light.” Donald Trump is well known to exaggerate and self-aggrandize his wealth. Combined with his evasiveness in revealing his financial statements, it’s unclear whether any of Trump’s subsequent inclusions on the Forbes 400 List are deserved. However, Forbes has broken down his net assets here and included him on the Forbes 400 List for the past few years. Is Trump still on the Forbes List? Trump is still on the Forbes 400 List as of 2019. Forbes estimates “that Donald Trump is still worth $3.1 billion” making him “now the 275th-richest person in America.” Whether he will remain on the list over the next few years remains to be seen. Keeping with the trend of lying about what he is worth, it’s reported that Donald claims his current worth is over $10 billion.  His claims have grown more outlandish over the years, however his licensing deals and inherited real estate properties are keeping on the list of the wealthiest in the country. If Trump does continue to be on the Forbes list, he claims it won’t be because of tax dollars.  Trump repeatedly makes it known that he isn’t taking a salary while he is President.

Is it True That the Bigger Your Shoe Size… https://www.encyclopedia.com/daily/is-it-true-that-the-bigger-your-shoe-size/ Thu, 24 Oct 2019 16:00:50 +0000 https://www.encyclopedia.com/daily/?p=503 You know what they say, the bigger your shoe size the bigger your… other things.  Men have stressed about this old saying for years.  It’s commonly known that a man with bigger shoes may be packing a bigger friend in the downstairs department, but is it actually true? Kids use this phrase to tease each other about the size of their penis and it’s even a dinner party joke well into adulthood.  While men stress over if their shoe size gives away how big or little their johnson is, many women still believe that size doesn’t actually matter.  Do bigger shoes mean a bigger penis? The bigger the shoe size the bigger the… It’s common misconception that shoe size indicates penis size. This means that no longer do men with small feet have to worry about being sized up before they take off their pants.  So if the bigger the shoe size the bigger the penis isn’t true – what does shoe size indicate? Shoe size actually indicates the size of a foot.  Influenced by height, weight, genetics and other factors the size a person’s feet has absolutely nothing to do with their penis.  Sadly, this particular saying, and others is still used to humiliate and make people feel not good enough sexually.  But haven’t we all felt not good enough, enough times already? A bigger shoe size means a bigger… sock size A bigger shoe size means a bigger sock and pretty much only that.  It could also mean difficulty finding a pair of new shoes and usually makes store bought dress shoes a thing of the past.  In truth, even smaller shoe sizes don’t indicate smaller sized penises either.  This means that the size of person’s shoe doesn’t tell us anything about what is in their pants. And that’s the way it should be.  Sayings like “the bigger the shoe size the bigger the penis” don’t really bring any helpful things to society.  They only give others something to use to tease and judge.  I think small shoe wearing men would agree that these old adages aren’t exactly funny when you’re the butt of the joke.  Even worse is when the teasing you get is because of something outside your control that you can’t change – like your feet. And what does it matter if bigger shoes mean a bigger penis anyway?  For years, it seems penis size has been equated with macho and manly.  During those years the obsession with penis size let to terrible jokes and men feeling insecure in their own bodies.  But all bodies are good bodies and all penis sizes are good too. In a world where everyone thinks the bigger the shoe size the bigger the penis, it’s hard to walk around with feet that look small – especially as a teenage boy in the locker room.  However the time for redemption has come. The bigger the shoe size DOES not mean the bigger the penis and we need to stop talking about it.

Is it True That Kissing Burns 6.4 Calories? https://www.encyclopedia.com/daily/is-it-true-that-kissing-burns-6-4-calories/ Thu, 24 Oct 2019 15:41:44 +0000 https://www.encyclopedia.com/daily/?p=501 Kissing does burn calories.  How many calories kissing burns actually depends on a few factors but experts say that it a good make-out session could be as beneficial as a brisk walk in the park. Does kissing burn 6.4 calories?  It could!  And the good news is the more passionately you do it, the more calories it could burn. Kissing burns calories and has health benefits Whether or not it’s true that kissing burns 6.4 calories doesn’t change the truth about it’s health benefits.  Laying one on someone we care about actually stimulates our mood and helps improve our immunity.  It also just makes us feel cared for.  Everyone knows that after a good session of slobber swapping on the couch they feel giddy.  That doesn’t just go for teenagers in puppy love either.  Even older adults who are kissing for the 5,000th time still get a head rush and a racing heart when they get into it hot and heavy. Experts say the more we get into it the more we will get out of it.  The excitement from a good kiss increases our heart rate and blood flow.  We start to get amped up and sometimes aroused.  Getting winded while lip-locked is also a good sign that kissing is burning more calories.  Obviously a peck on the cheek isn’t a kiss that will burn 6.4 calories but a deeply passionate kiss could.  On average, a kiss actually burns between 2 and 3 calories per minute.  That means for a kiss to burn 6.4 calories, it would have to be over 3 minutes long. Does kissing burn 6.4 calories? 3 minutes doesn’t sound like a lot when it comes to kissing but it’s actually longer than you may think.  3 minute kisses usually involve a little tongue and hopefully a lot more action. According to experts, the extra action is a good thing when it comes to burning calories.  The more intense and passionate a kiss is the more likely it is to burn 6.4 calories.  When couples make out and include heavy breathing and touching, maybe even some additional stimulation, the number of calories that kissing burns does go up. Can kissing burn 6.4 calories per minute? It could under the right circumstances – but usually it involves more than just kissing.  Bryant Stamford, a professor at the University of Louisville says that if things get really really hot and heavy and you’re thrashing around, you may burn the same amount of calories while kissing as a brisk walk, which is about 4 calories per minute. Even though kissing burns calories, it is unlikely to burn 6.4 calories per minute.  Unless you’re passionately involved, headed to the bedroom and slamming each other into walls on the way, kissing probably only burns about 3 calories per minute. However, kissing for a while leads to other intimate acts like foreplay, sex and orgasm.  Combined with the calories from kissing, a half hour romp with a partner could burn more than 7 calories a minute. Kissing does burn calories but to burn 6.4 calories a minute you’d have to do quite a bit more than play tonsil hockey.

40 Rare Historical Photos You Probably Haven’t Seen Before https://www.encyclopedia.com/daily/40-rare-historical-photos-you-probably-havent-seen-before/ Tue, 06 Aug 2019 12:15:22 +0000 https://www.encyclopedia.com/daily/?p=400 There are some not-so rare historical photos that we’ve all seen over the years.  Shots like Marilyn Monroe with her skirt blowing up and the men with their lunch pails sitting on steel beams have become part of history.  Other lesser known shots like those shared in this article tell a timeless story of days gone by.  These shots were not perfected for big media outlets so they paint a more candid and authentic story.  Some show pain and some joy, but no matter the emotion captured – these rare historical photos will tug at your heart strings and inspire you to take a trip down memory lane. These photos don’t discriminate, some of the photos are of major leaders and some are of major stars while others are from little known activists and hidden publicity stunts.  These rare historical photos, like all photos represent a frozen in time frame that shows what life was like at that moment.  The moments captured by these rare historical photos are both moving and endearing. Acrobats on top of the Empire State Building This photo from the 1930s is a delightfully frightening rare historical photo. Just 4 years after construction began, these three acrobats balance right on the edge of the 86th floor of the Empire State Building.  According to historical records, 3 men named Jarley Smith, Jewell Waddek and Jimmy Kerrigan were involved in the death defying stunt that took place on August 21, 1934. At that time the Empire State Building was still the World’s tallest building at 1,250 feet tall.  It would lose that title less than 40 years later to the World Trade Center. 2. Inside the Assembly of the Statue of Liberty This rare historical photo is from Paris in 1884.  The finishing touches were being placed on the Statue of Liberty before it was shipped to America.  The people seen in this photo were responsible for the construction of the statue later dubbed the “gateway to America.”  Assembly alone took 3 years but the statue itself had been underway for much longer than that. The idea was originally proposed by Edouard De Laboulaye in 1865.  After a trip to the United States in 1871, he finished the design.  By 1876, construction had began and by 1881 crews just like this one were assembling it’s pieces together in Paris. 3. A well judged ankle competition Beauty competitions are not a new age trend.  Perhaps the main difference in the competitions we see today and those like the one shown here in this rare historical photo is the standards of beauty.  In this rare photo from the summer of 1930, it’s seen that beauty of these women is being judged on their ankles. While no longer a representation of physical beauty in the modern age, the ankle used to be seen as part of the overall appeal of a woman.  It’s been said, that older beauty queens liked the ankle judging because it leveled the playing field for them against the younger beauty queens with prettier faces. 4. Men working on the Hoover Dam Men hover over top of the Black Canyon and the Colorado River riding inside the pipes that will soon be installed in the Hoover Dam.  Without today’s equipment on the job site, these men had to work under conditions much less than what OSHA would consider safe today.  True pioneers, the men who worked on huge construction projects like this one during and after The Great Depression are unsung American Heroes.  This rare historical photo was taken sometime between 1931 and 1936 while men were building the Hoover Dam. 5. Titanic survivors in life boats Survivors from the Titanic are seen boarding the Carpathia in this rare historical photo. More than 1500 people lost their lives on that day in 1912.  After the renown ship crashed into an iceberg, only a few hundred passengers were saved.  Many of those who didn’t get lost at sea were picked up by the Carpathia, the ship shown here.  Most of the people were likely from first class, as those with first class tickets had a 44% higher chance of surviving the tragedy.  According to some researchers, the design that was presented as “state of the art” back then was massively flawed and not at all unsinkable. 6. Mona Lisa returning Depicted in this rare historical photo is perhaps one of the greatest art saves from World War II. Mona Lisa moved more than one time after the war broke out.  In an attempt to save the world’s most beautiful treasures from the savage looting of the Nazis, the Mona Lisa was packed up and shipped from the Louvre on August 28, 1939.  From there she would move 5 more times before the war was over.  This photo was taken upon her arrival back at the Louvre.  This historical painting and many others were saved from war by concerned citizens that were often volunteers. 7. A famous woman artist in drag This rare historical photo shows a side of Frida Kahlo that rarely is talked about.  The famous Mexican artist was bold and beautiful.  More confident than most women of her time, Frida also dressed in drag. In this photo, she is dressed in a suit and tie, staring straight into the camera.  As a well known self portraitist, Frida knew exactly how to manipulate an image or a photo to get a desired outcome.  A far cry from her usual bold attire, this photo exists as proof of the multi-dimensional person that Frida Kahlo was. 8. Hats in New York Taken from above a busy New York street, this rare historical photo accurately displays the hustle and bustle of the times. The sea of white hats shows hard working men on their way to try to make a living.  This photo is more than just men in white hats though.  It shows the history of the fight, the togetherness and the support from that era. In 1930 when this photo was taken, times were tough for many of the men under those hats, but they kept persevering. 9. Tesla Publicity Stunt This rare historical photo was a setup.  Tesla could have never really sat that close to his invention.  According to historians, this photo was a double exposure that was used for a publicity stunt.  Not the only historical photo taken in his Colorado Springs lab, this is one of many.  Another noteable photo is the first photo taken under phosphorescent light, which was also of Tesla and photographed by Mark Twain. 10. A Family separated by the Berlin Wall A desperate family introduces their new family members to their relatives in this historical photo. Taken shortly after construction began in 1961, this photo is a beautiful way to show the true impact of the division of Germany.  This wall divided East and West Berlin until 1989.  During that time, families just like this one were isolated from each other.  Here they show people on the other side of the wall their new babies.  Undoubtedly, additional heartbreaking photos like this exist in more places than just Germany. 11. Woman fighting her way into a marathon In this rare historical photo, the first woman to run in the Boston Marathon is getting chased down to be kicked out.  Kathrine Switzer entered the race after months of training with a veteran.  As she recalls, when she first mentioned it all the men told her that women were too delicate to run in such a grueling race.  She didn’t seem to care about that.  After reading the rule book and seeing nothing about gender, she entered the race only to be chased down by men telling her to get out.  She did however, go on to finish and the be known as the first woman to do so. 12. A boy with new shoes This young Austrian boy is delighted.  The look on his face is more representative of the era than he could ever have known.  This photo was taken just after World War II.  During that time, even the richest nations in the world were experiencing a time of depression and lack.  While the men were off at war, women were handling increased costs and less support while the children were suffering as well.  This young boy and his joy about the shoes, the end of the war, and prosperous times to come is both sad and heartwarming. 13. First female POC at an all white school This rare historical photo is a powerful display of racism.  Just after the Pearsall plan passed in North Carolina, 40 students of color applied to transfer to a white school.  Pictured here is one of the first young black students at a white school.  She was 15 at the time and the year was 1957.  The ridicule and threats she endured just because the color of her skin are not unlike the systematic oppression facing POCs today.  Due to the hate she endured, her parents forced her to withdraw from the Harding High School after just 4 days. 14. Beatles before Abbey Road We’ve all seen the iconic shot of The Beatles crossing Abbey Road.  This rare historical photo was taken just before that shot, when they weren’t so camera ready.  Preparing for the shot, the 4 men look more like themselves in this picture.  It’s suspected this photo was taken in between the shots for the album cover.  Maybe that explains why Paul looks so angry. 15. Inside the Assembly line On the assembly line in Henry Ford’s shop, these men are working on some of the first efficiently produced automobiles.  Using his desire to make cars that nearly everyone could buy, Ford found a way to make his Model T in much less time.  His creation, the assembly line, is still used today.  In factories across the world, machines and belts like this one move products down a line to be assembled.  It’s effectiveness was proven easily when the time it took to create an automobile was decreased from just over 12 hours to nearly 2 hours. 16. Robin Williams as a cheerleader This rare historical photo really shows of the legs of this well loved comedian and actor.  Trotting across the field in character, Robin Williams became the first male Denver Broncos cheerleader.  This photo was taken in 1979 and Robin was soaring to popularity by way of the character, Mork. Mork was first introduced to fans by Williams on the set of Happy Days and then later became more famous during the show Mork and Mindy.  On this November day, Mork put on a uniform and made history. 17. Chicago in 1967 In this rare historical photo we get a glimpse into Chicago from the late 60s.  This city was booming around this time.  Pictured here is “The Loop” and some well known signage can be seen.  Taken from right by the Randolph/Wabash station, this photo includes a nod to a well known Jazz venue of the time, Black Hawk Restaurant.  The famous white sign on the left was popular place for nightlife.  Across the street is Stouffer’s restaurant, the first place to eat built on Wabash. 18. Arnold Schwarzenegger seeing NYC for the FIRST time The year on this rare historical photo is 1968.  Arnold has just fulfilled his lifelong dream to move to America.  After winning several bodybuilding titles, he hopped a plane and made the move at the ripe age of 21.  It was a brisk October when he landed in NYC before heading to LA to train.  His face says it all in this picture.  He had hopes for a brighter future and an acting career.  Do you think that in this picture he knew he would one day be a Governor? 19. On the Set of Batman In this rare historical photo we see the behind the scenes of the 1966 Batman film.  It was the first ever movie adaption of the DC comic characters.  Here we see Batman, played by Adam West and Robin, played by Burt Ward a top a building fighting crime.  Just two months after the last episode of the first season of the TV showed aired, this film hit theaters.  Most of the original cast from the TV show was in the film. It was 104 minutes long and cost about 1.5 millions dollars to produce, which was a pretty hefty price tag in the 60s. 20. The Beatles with Muhammad Ali This photo may be a joke but it is very representative of who they were at the time.  These were the greats.  Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest boxers of the 20th century in the same room, let alone the same photo, with one of the greatest bands of the time is a dream come true.  This rare historical photo is sure to make the heart smile of anyone who lived in the 60s.  Although – it does look like the Beatles may need a little HELP. 21. Singing Nazis In 1933, just days after gaining control, the Nazis began their anti-jew propaganda campaign.  Initially it started with a one day boycott of all Jewish businesses.  Nazi groups like this one placed stars of David and messages on the doors and windows of shops that were owned by or employed Jewish workers.  They also sang, like the group pictured in this rare historical photo, to help get others on their side.  The plan must have worked because the shop in this photo fired all of their Jewish employees and was awarded a “pure aryan” sticker from the Nazis. 22. Stalin’s Body Double The rumors that Stalin had a “twin” weren’t exactly true.  It had long been hypothesized that Stalin had a double that replaced him in certain situations.  Many speculated it was for safety and others said it was so he could be in more than one place at once.  Whatever the reason for the double, it was proven true that he did have one after his death.  Former Juggler, Felix Dadaev spoke up about his time working for the Kremlin in 2008 when he received permission to write an autobiography.  In his book, he speaks about not being the only person working as a double for Stalin. 23. A lot of brain power in one room In this photo two tech visionaries meet to discuss something that will never actually come to fruition.  Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, both geniuses in their own right, originally met to set in motion a plan for Microsoft to be the software used on Macintosh computers.  As you may know, that isn’t the case.  They made several trips back and forth to discuss the details and even started work on developing a simple software but the deal turned sour when neither were impressed with the work of the other. 24. Charlie Meets Gandi In September of 1931, Gandhi made a trip from India to London.  It would be one of the few trips he would take away from India.  He did not stay in the city but instead on the East End, among the poor which he said he preferred.  During his 12 week stay he slept on the floor in a small room and felt at home.  Chaplin, who was in London for the Premiere of City Lights, tracked down Gandhi to meet him.  The meeting was brief but this rare historical photo was taken during those few precious moments. 25. Fidel Castro smoking in a meeting Here, Fidel Castro is seen smoking a Cuban cigar and wearing more than one watch.  In this meeting he sits at a table with Khrushchev for negotiations.  Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, the meeting had gone well.  Often seen wearing two watches, Fidel is known of have kept tabs on more than one time zone at a time.  The watches he wore reportedly allowed to him to see what time it was in Havana, DC, and Moscow. 26. Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge This rare historical photo was taken just before the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge.  After 4 years of construction and a few decades of planning, the bridge opened in May of 1937.  This photo was taken that same year and depicts a nice view of the huge anchors and the bridge coming together.  The day before it officially opened for automobiles, a couple hundred thousand people crossed on foot or by bike.  It’s size and color made it quickly become an American symbol and landmark. 27. Elvis in the Army The King in uniform may be just as glorious a sight as him on stage. Prior to getting his big break with Heartbreak Hotel, he served in the U.S. Army.  This rare historical photo shows a sad and lonely Elvis Presley.  Its been suggested he was likely longing for the mother he was close with and a musical outlet in this photo. He went on to become a hit, even thought he was a very shy man.  Never performing outside the US or writing any of his own songs, Elvis became famous for his appealing performances, great looks and miraculous voice.  Not everyone liked his voice though, he was rejected from an audition more than once. 28. An unsightly and inappropriate bathing suit Pictured in this rare historical photo is Annette Kellermann.  A lifelong swimmer, Kellermann had won many races as a teenager and even attempted to swim across the English Channel.  She was the very first woman to ever wear a one piece bathing suit and advocated for women to wear a bathing suit that wasn’t the previously approved pantaloons.  In 1907, wearing one of her one piece suits like the one seen here, she was arrested for indecency.  Her arrest skyrocketed her cause and she created her own line of swimsuits as a result. 29. A scary cage approved for babies This rare historical photo is of a home “appliance” that didn’t really catch on.  Designed to help apartment living house wives air out their babies, this invention from the 1920s would have terrified the mothers of the 50s.  Rumored to have caught on after a 1884 book called “The Care and Feeding of Children,” these baby cages were mostly found in London.  Dr. Luther Emmett, who wrote the book, described that in order to renew and purify their blood, infants must be aired out.  Do you think this baby cage is what he had in mind? 30. The Original Ronald McDonald Who knew the original Ronald McDonald was so terrifying? This rare historical photo is of the original Ronald McDonald from 1963.  The  character was created by the actor who played him initially.  Also known for being on The Today Show, Willard Scott claims that he created the character because the giant fast food chain asked him to.  For nearly a decade, Scott appeared in the costume as the social icon.  After 1971, the Ronald McDonald began to evolve into the mascot we see today. 31. Disneyland Lunchroom A peek inside the employee lunchroom at Disney is provided by this rare historical photo.  Taken in 1961, the photo depicts a line of costumed Disney characters with their lunch trays and has led historians to believe it was shot for publicity. It’s likely that some of these characters would have taken off their heads or masks in the lunch line, but that wouldn’t have made such a lovely photo.  What catches our eye most is the smiles on the faces of all the employees.  Is the food that good or is it just because they work at the happiest place on Earth? 32. Einstein in sandals Few people know that Einstein was often sockless.  Eccentric in his own way, his sandal covered feet in this rare historical photo from 1939 serves as proof. The story behind this picture is a short but funny one.  Pictured sitting on a rock in Long Island with department store owner Rothman, is Einstein in his sandals, which he did not have an easy time purchasing.  Rothman misunderstood him due to his accent and ordered him sundials instead of sandals.  According to neighbors, he spent his Summers relaxing in this Long Island cove, wearing his sandals and playing a violin. 33. Women’s bathing suits being measured Even if women had the right to vote, they still didn’t have any freedom of choice.  That extended to the clothing they wore and how they acted.  This rare historical photo from the 1920s shows a man, with a measuring tape, actually making sure that grown women having on bathing suits that aren’t too high above their knee.  As young men look on in the background, these women are put to the test about the clothing they wear.  Who knows what would happen if one was found indecent. 34.  Original Winnie the Pooh From 1967, this rare historical photo shows the original Winnie the Pooh and his friend Christopher Robin.  The Disney version is adapted from a set of children’s books written by English author, A. A. Milne.  The story of Winnie the Pooh is based on the author’s son and his toys.  Most of the characters, including Pooh and Eeyore have been reported to have been named after toys that the real Christopher Robin had.  Since those stories were written, Pooh Bear has become an international icon. 35. A Knocker Upper Before the days of alarm clocks, Knocker Uppers could be seen on the streets in the wee hours of the morning tapping on windows to wake up families.  A common sight in Britain, the Knocker Upper became prevalent during the rise of shift work.  The odd hours for sleeping opened up a need for a third party to help with getting to work on time.  Their jobs lasted well into the industrial revolution.  Losing their careers to alarm clocks, the knocker uppers are now a thing of the distant past. 36. A Penguin getting a shower A penguin enjoys a nice shower from a zookeeper in this photo.  However, in 1930 when this photo was taken the fancy penguin displays and bathing facilities were not available.  Perhaps that explains why the shower head is actually a watering can.  This zoo keeper has clearly given a watering can shower to this penguin before.  Judging by the looks of the other penguin approaching, the zookeeper should have brought a second watering can. 37. Paul McCartney and the first selfie We don’t really know if this was the first “selfie,” but it has to be close.   Taken by Paul McCartney himself, this rare historical photo was captured the year before The Beatles formed.  Posing for himself in front a mirror, McCartney held up a camera and snapped a photo.  A haunting and terrified look on his face, we wonder what was going thru this his mind when the shutter went off.   Tell us your best guess in the comments of this article. 38. Pontiac’s Glass Car It was actually made of Plexiglass but it was transparent.  In 1939, Pontiac worked together with Rohm and Haas, the company that first discovered Plexiglass.  Together they fashioned this car as a large advertisement. Created for the World’s Fair, this car was a head turner.  Dubbed the “glass car,” it was the first transparent car in America.  Costing just $25,000 to build, the car sold for over $300,000 at auction in Michigan in July of 2011 after belonging to the same family since the 1980s. 39. A swim mobile In the 60s in New York, a mobile swimming pool drove thru neighborhoods on hot days.  This swimming pool was on the back of a large truck and filled with water.  As it drove around town, children and adults climbed inside to take a dip.  While it didn’t stick around for long, the idea did spread.  Detroit had their own versions of swim mobiles in the 80s.  It’s rumored that a new and improved version of the swim mobile is in the works in the UK and may soon be making stops in London neighborhoods. 40. A horse drawn combine We’ve all heard and seen stories of horse drawn buggies and plows.  However, very few have seen a horse drawn combine.  The number of horses it takes to pull such a large piece of equipment is astounding.  This rare historical photo gives us insight into just how difficult farming used to be prior to engines and additional machines.  Farming has come a long way since these rare historical photos were taken. Which historical photo shared in this article made you reminiscence the most?  Tell us in the comments.

40 Beautiful Vintage Photos We Can’t Look Away From https://www.encyclopedia.com/daily/40-beautiful-vintage-photos-we-cant-look-away-from/ Tue, 09 Jul 2019 03:50:21 +0000 https://www.encyclopedia.com/daily/?p=342 Looking at beautiful vintage photos is a past time that many people hold near and dear to their heart.  It brings back memories from simpler times that may have not always been the most friendly.  While our history is dotted with both good and bad moments, it’s the whole of those experiences that makes us who we are. The beautiful vintage photos in this article may bring back fond memories or teach you something about the past that you didn’t know. That’s the thing about beautiful vintage photos – they tell a story that not everyone knows.  Sometimes they tell a story that was secret or hidden from the world until decades later.  And remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so some of the photos may not represent beauty in the traditional way.  Beauty is more about progress, understanding and discovery than it is aesthetics and these beautiful vintage photos prove that. Frank Zappa with a cute cat Frank Zappa in purple in this purple room chilling with his parts while cradling a cat is such a beautiful vintage photo.  Zappa’s work was also beautiful.  A composer, musician and producer – he was known for bending genres and his experimental approach.  Like many well-loved artists, he used his music to communicate how he felt about the times and the problems people faced.  Vocal about his criticisms, the was not a fan of the education system or any organized religion.  He communicated the causes he believed in the art he produced. <!–nextpage–> 2. Sharon Tate before her murder Sharon Tate looks elegant and gorgeous in this beautiful vintage photo.  Perched upon a footstool, her high heels are tossed to the side in the background.  Her acting career is only half of what people remember about her.  After getting great reviews, she took on a role in that earned her a Golden Globe.  While many know her for the role she played in that cult classic, Valley of the Dolls, her name made headlines for more than just that.  In 1969, just two years after her Golden Globe award, Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson Family. <!–nextpage–> 3. Farrah Fawcett  Farah Fawcett’s natural beauty is the highlight of this picture.  The tanned blonde beauty won Americans over with her smile as soon as she appeared on television.  Her rise to fame began with her role as one of the Charlie’s Angels.  Her acting skills did not go unnoticed. She won 4 Emmy Awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe 6 times.  As she aged, her health declined.  She fought a 3 year battle with cancer before she was taken far too soon. Loved by all her fans, they were sad to hear of her struggle. <!–nextpage–> 4. A domesticated Marilyn Monroe Taken in 1958, this beautiful vintage photo shows Marilyn Monroe playing a more traditional role.  It was rare that her life was as put together as this picture.  While she was a role model for many women and also how they took charge of their lives – she had many skeletons hidden in her closet.  In this photo, she pours the husband who betrayed her a drink while he chats with a colleague.  Marilyn wasn’t cut out out for the housewife duties of her time, she was usually late and often messy. <!–nextpage–> 5. Another side of Samantha from Bewitched Before she was the nose twinkling witchy mother that stole the heart of America, Elizabeth Montgomery had some very different roles in the movies and TV. In this beautiful vintage photo, she was playing the role of a high class woman who fell in love with a gangster.  In the film, the man she was in love with murdered men in cold blood, but that didn’t change her opinion of him.  Perhaps that was because she too had played the role of a murderer before. <!–nextpage–> 6. Sally Fields Promo Shot from the 70s This beautiful vintage photo of Sally Fields is a promotional shot for “Smokey and the Bandit.”  Many regard the part with Sally and Burt Reynolds as the best of the 3 part series.  This photo shows the captivating and warm look that we all know AND LOVE Sally Fields for.  That look sparked chemistry with her co-star and the two began to date after filming was over.  While Sally Fields has been beautiful in almost every role she’s played – the character pictured here really suited her and her spirit during that time. <!–nextpage–> 7. Christina Applegate and Brad Pitt looking flawless for the 80s The teenage daughter from Married with Children reportedly only spent one evening with the charming yet rude womanizer, Brad Pitt.  It’s our best guess this photo was taken on that night in 1989.  Standing side by side in this beautiful vintage photo, the two stars are the epitome of 80s style.  Her hair, her heavy lip and those high gloss nails just add to the look.  Brad is looking very vintage too, wearing a broken-in leather jacket and unruly hair.  Rumors say that shortly after this photo was taken, Christina ditched Brad for another guy and left with him. <!–nextpage–> 8. Students joining together This beautiful vintage photo was likely taken in the mid-60s.  While it’s unclear what the students are protesting, it does look like they are joining together in a peaceful one.  During that time it was most likely one of two causes they were standing up against.  Teenage students often fought back against the segregation and racial injustice in their schools.  Also during that time, the Vietnam war was starting.  It’s impact helped bring groups together that may have otherwise fought.  This photo shows togetherness in a beautiful way. <!–nextpage–> 9. London in the 60s This beautiful vintage photo tells an amazing story.  Two shoppers in vibrant colors and hemlines above their knees symbolize so much in this picture from the 60s.  Taken on Carnaby Street in London, these two women could be part of the youth driven revolution of the late 60s.  Tired of conforming, the kids of the “Swinging 60s” started their own version of normal and that included fashion.  The freedom they have compared to the women who walked those same streets just 5 years before is entirely visible.  Back then, the desire for freedom was worth the risk. <!–nextpage–> 10. An elegant photo by a well known photographer This beautiful vintage photo was taken by Louise Dahl-Wolfe.  He is well known photographer who worked with Harper’s Bazaar.  He took many cover shots and personal black and white sets for actresses.  He is most often associated with photos of Marilyn Monroe, but many of his photos, like this one are gorgeous.  Pictured here is June Vincent, who played many different roles during her time as an actress in the 40s and 50s.  This photo of June shows exactly why she commonly played the young attractive women trying to steal a husband. <!–nextpage–> 11. Vintage Wedding Photos These 1920s wedding photos are much more elegant than what today’s couples have on their mantle.  Beautiful vintage photos like this one tell a story of when details mattered.  Every bit of makeup, angle and placement is nearly perfect.  These photos were taken to remember a special event and would be kept forever.  These days, people carry cameras around in their pockets and snap a photo whenever it suits them.  In the 1920s when this photo was taken, pictures and what was shown in them meant something. While photos are still important, they lack the extra effort seen in vintage pictures. <!–nextpage–> 12. Vintage Disneyland There isn’t anything more beautiful than seeing a little girl happily look at one of her favorite Disney Princesses. In this beautiful vintage photo, a young girl and boy visit Disneyland.  They are surrounded by Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs but look at Snow White adoringly.  Holding their balloons shaped like the trademark Mouse ears of Disney, they do look like they are in the happiest place on Earth.  The vintage costumes of the characters aren’t as flashy as those seen in the Magic Kingdom today. <!–nextpage–> 13. Vintage Ice Cream Truck (and outfits) This beautiful vintage photo depicts a favorite from around the world.  Ice Cream trucks have been delighting kids inside neighborhoods across the globe for years.  Seen here is a Mr. Whippy truck in England, where it got it’s start.  Mr. Whippy trucks have been driving around passing out cold treats in every country since the 60s. This picture of a vintage ice cream truck was likely taken in the 70s, judging by those outfits.  Fewer Mr. Whippy trucks are in circulation today, but the ice cream truck tradition is still alive and well.  Every one of us knows the delight of hearing that music coming on a hot summer day. <!–nextpage–> 14. Real life Outsiders Looking like the real life version of The Outsiders, the teenage boys in this beautiful vintage photo are proud to be Greasers.  During the 50s and 60s, when this photo was likely taken, working and low class teenagers embraced a specific subculture.  Starting with teenage boys greasing their hair, the lifestyle spread quickly throughout lower class America.  This photo was taken in New York and shows the typical dress and hair style of the boys. They also often smoked cigarettes, worked on  cars and listened to Rockabilly music. <!–nextpage–> 15. Vintage Harlem Proof of resilience in an already crushed community, Harlem in the 70s is a true image of strength.  This beautiful vintage photo shows a couple, still in Harlem carrying on life as usual while the world around them crumbled.  Clinging tight to each other and their community after riots rocked their neighborhoods, the folks living in Harlem when this photo was taken knew the struggle and many still know it today.  Following the deaths of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr in the 60s, many fled from Harlem.  Those who stayed rebuilt while their fashion and music taste influenced the nation. <!–nextpage–> 16. 1930s Feminists This beautiful vintage photo shows women fighting a struggle they still fight today. Of course, these women fought against many more unfair rules than women do now.  These women weren’t allowed to wear whatever type of bathing suit they wanted.  When this photo was taken some beaches still had police with measuring tapes determining whether or not a bathing suit was fit to wear in public.  Standing in front of a sign that prohibits what they are wearing, these women stand for their right to choose what to do with and how to present their bodies, just like the feminists of today. <!–nextpage–> 17. Proof of Progress It may be hard to see the positives in this beautiful vintage photo.  Today, it’s illegal in many states to even smoke in the car with a child.  In the 1950s, because of advertising, it was thought that smoking cigarettes was virtually harmless and people smoked them and offered them to kids like in this photo.  While the beauty isn’t readily apparent, this photo shows just how much progress we’ve made with protecting the public from the harms of tobacco products and nicotine. <!–nextpage–> 18. A Vintage Burger King We aren’t going to lie, we sort of wish that Burger King still looked like it did in this beautiful vintage photo.  Sporting a style straight from the 1970s, the Burger King in this picture is bright and lively.  The exterior walls are plastered with the reds and orange hues so loved during that era.  Today, Burger King looks much more bland and much more modern.  Often referred to as retro by today’s youth, the color scheme and patterns tell a tale of a better time, a time when more effort was put into aesthetics and quality. <!–nextpage–> 19. A row of Telephone Operators This beautiful vintage photo shows a relic of the past, the telephone operator.  This photo was taken at the Capitol switchboard, but does feature a common scene from switchboards across the country.  Operators were on the other end of the line when you picked up the original telephones installed in houses.  They aided in connecting the telephone line to another line that either was local or to a line that left the area.  Operators and their work were responsible for making communication possible in the early days of the phone, but their efforts are rarely recognized. <!–nextpage–> 20. The Chicago Theater on the rise A great shot of the Chicago Theater just 6 years after it opened can be seen in this beautiful vintage photo from 1927.  Opening in 1921, the Chicago theater didn’t become a hotspot right away.  A few years after it opened it became the flagship theater for the Balaban brothers.  Business started booming in 1925 and began to slow down in the mid-40s due to the war.  Like many theaters from the 30s, this one used discounted rates and used other gimmicks to sale customers on coming to see a show. <!–nextpage–> 21. Detroit before the depression This beautiful vintage photo shows what America is all about.  Taken in 1920 on a street in Detroit, this photo shows innovation, tourism, and the evolution of the working class all in one moment.  The double decker bus with excited travelers and the cars on the road signifies the growth that built the nation we live in today.  Regardless of where we stand as a nation, the history of our infrastructure started with some of the people and creativity we see in this picture. Progress is not perfection, but this photo is a reminder of how far we’ve come. <!–nextpage–> 22. Wedding rings that represent massacre This hauntingly beautiful vintage photo is also a reminder from our troubled past.  The wedding rings in this picture belonged to those who were taken by the holocaust.  Ripped from their family and shred of any personal rights and dignity, the people who wore these rings were killed because of what they believed and what they looked like.  Photos like this have beauty because they remind us what we stand for and help us remember what we must not allow to ever happen again. <!–nextpage–> 23. Violence vs Love This beautiful vintage photo shows is a timeless representation of the war within us and the wars we fight against each other.  Facing bayonets just inches from her face, a brave woman holds a single flower in protest of war.  She is not alone, although the photo makes it look like she is.  In fact, she is just one of many protesters at the Pentagon that day.  The year was 1967 and they were taking a stand against soldiers in the National Guard during an anti-war demonstration.  This protest against the Vietnam War was not the first and it won’t be the last demonstration against military action. <!–nextpage–> 24. When guns were allowed in school In the early days, guns weren’t considered a big deal.  Before the days of Columbine and more recent school shootings, students were allowed to participate in shooting clubs like the one pictured in this beautiful vintage photo.  Even women, like these, were allowed to be part of the shooting club.  In the 1930s, hand guns weren’t used in violent acts like they are today.  The spread of poverty, mental illness and systematic oppression coupled with the normalizing of violence and gun ownership has made shooting clubs at schools a thing of the past. <!–nextpage–> 25. New Orleans in 1950 New Orleans in 1950 was booming.  After the Storyville district was disabled in the 20s, the folks were craving the music that had become part of their culture.  Hiding for years in living rooms and underground venues, by the 50s, when this beautiful vintage photo was taken, the culture was coming back to life.  Depicted in this picture is the famed Bourbon Street at a time when nightclubs and live music was beginning to ramp up.  Just 10 years after this photo was created, burlesque clubs and scantily clad servers would be used on this very street to lure in customers. <!–nextpage–> 26. Before there were cubicles This beautiful vintage photo shows life before cubicles.  The history behind the photo isn’t completely known but it is believed that this one of the first “computerized” offices photographed.  At this “computing station” it was common for data entry clerks, secretaries and other typing jobs to sit all day and work.  Several managers stand around in suits supervising them. The mix of men and women workers in the same common space is not something seen today.  Today, many larger companies, like Google and Facebook, are navigating back toward co-working spaces like this one, but more fun. <!–nextpage–> 27. A Peddlers Wagon The story of the peddler and his wagon is often a troubled one.  Peddlers got a a bad reputation because the prices they asked were often too high for the neighborhoods they were forced to sale in.  Not to mention, they were often travelers and not local, so those who were from the area were dubious of their tactics.  Peddlers were basically the street vendors of yesteryear.  They sometimes drove loaded down wagons or trucks just like this one filled with useful, occasionally second hand goods. <!–nextpage–> 28. A bike with a sail This beautiful vintage photo has a story behind it.  And just like many old photos, there is more than one story.  Some say that this was one of the first bikes designed to also sail and some say that isn’t the case.  What does seem to be certain is that between 1900 and 1905 this photo was taken on a beach in Florida.  While what the 4 people are actually is doing is unclear, it does seem to look like 3 women out on a joyride, not as sophisticated as the parasailing we have today. <!–nextpage–> 29. The elegance of the Good Witch Elegance and glamour from the Edwardian era floods this beautiful vintage photo.  Pictured is Billie Burke, an American actress from the 30s.  The beauty and poise that Burke had is shown in this photo and it’s quite eye catching.  That same charisma carried her into her most famous role.  Billie was known most commonly for being Glinda the Good Witch of the North in the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz.  She and many other actress of her era embodied the grace and elegance that was expected of women in those days. <!–nextpage–> 30. A dance party on the beach Dance parties on the beach don’t happen nearly as often as they did in the days of old.  In this beautiful vintage photo we see several people gettin’ down in the sand.  Loved by many, these beach parties were a hit in the 50s.  Folks from all over the neighborhood would gather on the beach and show off their dance moves.  These parties were often thrown by teenagers when school was out and throughout the summer. It wasn’t unheard of to catch some people dancing on the beach around a bonfire all the way thru until Fall. <!–nextpage–> 31. Actual bathing suits This beautiful vintage photo includes several things that used to be pretty common but aren’t so much anymore. This young woman and a much older man hold hands as they wade thru water in Belgium.  In the early 1900s, bathing suits and beaches were used for more practical things, like actually bathing.  Seen in the picture are wooden boxes with wagon wheels on them.  Those were commonly called bath houses and provided a place for folks to bathe.  Of course, fun in the sun was still had but bath houses often sat close to shore. <!–nextpage–> 32. Forgotten Victims of the Depression Everyone was impacted by the depression.  It was the biggest economic downfall the country had seen. In this beautiful vintage photo we see both worry and hope in an African American family.  During the depression, African Americans seen cuts in hours and wages far before their white counterparts.  Since systematic oppression had already forced African Americans into lower paying jobs, they had no means to get thru the hard times.  In this photo a young family sits on their steps trying to keep going in the face of despair. <!–nextpage–> 33. A progressive Italian woman You can see the strength of this woman in this beautiful vintage photo.  Pictured here is Franca Viola, one of the first women to refuse to marry her rapist.  After she was kidnapped and raped by her ex-boyfriend, who also happened to be a member of the mafia, she refused to marry him.  Prior to that, victims of rape were expected to marry their abuser.  Often called “rehabilitation marriage,” this was a common way that victims of rape were treated in the past.  The stance Franca took happened just over 50 years ago. <!–nextpage–> 34. The Gym on the Titanic This beautiful vintage photo is of the gymnasium that was on board of the Titanic. First class passengers had the luxury of accessing the state of the art gym.  For 1912, the equipment in the picture was top of the line.  Although nothing like the gyms we have on every corner today, this gym did have some equipment that would be recognized by a modern day gym rat. The gym at the Titanic had different hours for the binary genders.  Women were allowed in from 9am to 12pm and men were allowed to workout from 2pm to 6pm. <!–nextpage–> 35. 1969 fashion and freedom This beautiful vintage photo captures the 60s perfectly.  Seen here is a young student named Rosemary Shoong, who claimed to have made her own dress.  Style and fashion was more DIY than it had been in previous years as the kids from the 60s horrified their parents with their open expression and exploration.  During that time, hippies and showing midriffs rocked the boat that society had created.  These kids were often taking a stand against injustice and trying to instill peace.  Misunderstood and discounted, the hippies of the 60s were taking part in an awakening they were years to early for. <!–nextpage–> 36. The old way to make a phone call These phone lines may not LOOK that gorgeous, but what they did is where their brilliance lies.  In this beautiful vintage photo we are able to see the early stages of how we began to communicate with one another.  Very different than just pulling a small computer out of your pocket, phone calls in the days of this picture had to be connected in a much more tangible way.  Each phone connected to a business or hub that then connect to an operator.  That operator then connected a caller to another set of wires that went thru hubs and businesses to another house. <!–nextpage–> 37. The first female body builders The appeal in this beautiful vintage photo doesn’t lie in the muscle definition but instead in the power the women of the 19th century had.  Their resilience and fight to be equal paved the way for the fights women of today are having. Pictured here is Louise Leers, a Strongwoman from the 1930s.  Originally, muscular and strongwomen were used as sideshow acts at circuses and other sporting events. <!–nextpage–> 38. Funeral in Chinatown Not recognized for what it is, this beautiful vintage photo depicts a funeral in Chinatown.  During a very trying time for many immigrants, Chinatown was a refuge.  Back then it wasn’t a very pleasant place as the people there were stricken with poverty and in a new a strange country.  Together, the people there built up a community they could be proud of.  In the face of adversity, they found beauty in their struggles and transformed their situation.  Their story and this image is the story of America, immigrants making the best out of what they have. <!–nextpage–> 39. Marilyn Monroe’s First Marriage Before she was Marilyn Monroe, she was married to a man named James Dougherty.  She was just 16 when she tied the knot for the first time and her wedding dress was gorgeous. Their marriage was a rouse to keep her from having to go back into foster care but the two were reportedly happy until she struck it big. Then named Norma Jean Baker, she would later get a divorce and go on to be a Hollywood icon.  During her time in the spotlight, she would have several lovers and not keep a husband.  She was married 3 times before her death. <!–nextpage–> 40. A stunning library Sadly, this amazing relic from history is now a parking garage.  However, it’s grandeur is preserved in this beautiful vintage photo.  The Old Cincinnati Library was a wonderful display.  Cast iron shelving and checkerboard marble tile made the entrance and the whole library have that classic old world feel.  The floors were lit by skylights in the vaulted ceilings and patrons enjoyed both the sights and the plethora of books stocked on the library shelves.  Libraries this grand rarely exist today but the longing to enter a nice library that looks like this never goes away.

Some of the extraordinary moments in history included on this list may be closely associated with a more commonly known event.  Some of them are lesser known and may seem unbelievable.  Looking back on some of these extraordinary moments in history may make you feel nostalgic and some may leave you feeling disbelief.  Regardless of how these extraordinary events make us feel today, they are all important parts of history that reflect who we are and what we stand for. Signing of the Civil Rights Act This photo is from one of the most extraordinary moments in history for America.  President Lyndon B. Johnson sits at his desk during a ceremony in the White House on July 2, 1964.  During this ceremony, Johnson signed the civil rights act. This is a landmark law that made it illegal to discriminate against anyone based on their race, skin color, religion, sex or origins.  Even though this bill was signed into law over 50 years ago, the people of this nation are still fighting for their freedom from discrimination.

Broken glass lake — Lake Michigan Photo: Joel Bissell | MLive.com One of the five Great Lakes (remember HOMES: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior), Lake Michigan often gets blasted by winter storms. The frigid weather of this past winter left the lake completely frozen over, which is not out of the ordinary for this northern climate. However, this year something incredible happened when the frozen lake began to melt—the movement of the waves below the surface caused it to crack and shatter into thousands of pieces, creating the appearance of broken glass spreading out into the horizon. This dreamlike image could be straight from a certain frozen tale we’re all familiar with, but alas, it’s just Michigan.
