Arthur Cayley

1821-1895

English mathematician who created several branches of abstract algebra and restored the international prestige of British mathematics. A lawyer by profession, he was a prolific writer and contributed to the foundations of linear algebra and invariant theory. His work on matrices played a part in mathematical physics in the twentieth century as did his approach to geometries more general than the traditional Euclidean version.
