autochrome Method developed by the Lumière brothers for colour photography, first marketed in 1907. This process enabled simple colour photography. The screen plate consisted of glass on one side coated with round particles of starch grains, dyed red, blue and green and mixed at random and compressed. Carbon black was laid between the dots and the whole plate covered with a varnish. An emulsion was applied to the reverse side. In widespread use for more than 30 years, this method was an improvement over the earlier three-colour screen method.
