Bátiz (Campbell), Enrique, Mexican conductor; b. Mexico City, May 4, 1942. He commenced piano lessons at an early age and made his first public appearance when he was only five; following studies at the Univ. of Mexico (degree, 1959) and Southern Methodist Univ. in Dallas (1960–62), he continued his training at the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y. (1963–65) and undertook postgraduate work at the Warsaw Cons. In 1969 he made his conducting debut in Mexico City, and in 1971 founded the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México, which developed into one of Mexico’s leading orchs. From 1983 to 1990 he was artistic director of the Orquesta Filarmónica de la Ciudad de México; he also served (from 1984) as principal guest conductor of the Royal Phil, of London, which he conducted on a major tour of his homeland in 1988. He again served as conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México from 1990.
