Boston University was founded in 1839. It is accredited by New England Association of Schools and Colleges. It first offered distance learning courses in 2001. In fall 2003, there were 500 students enrolled in distance learning courses. Institutionally administered financial aid is available to distance learners.

Boston University's Office of Distance Education was established in 2000 to meet the educational needs of today's busy professionals. Using various technologies, Boston University offers courses and programs from a variety of departments and colleges at the University through videotape, CD-ROM, and online programs via the Internet. These programs represent the University's commitment to high-quality programming for distance learners and brings the classroom to the student's office, company, or home.
The Office of Distance Education allows students to take selected courses, complete a graduate certificate, and even pursue a complete graduate degree program via the Internet. The courses are highly interactive and challenging, and they are developed and taught by Boston University faculty members. Also offered are a variety of noncredit programs available on videotape or CD-ROM. Recent seminars on optics, e-business, communications, manufacturing, computer languages, and project management have been offered. New topics and programs are regularly developed, based on industry needs.
