German art National tradition dating back to the illuminated manuscripts of the 9th and 10th centuries. By the end of the Middle Ages, a flourishing tradition in wood-carving had grown up in the s with the work of Veit Stoss and Tilman Riemenschneider. In the 16th century, Germany was at the forefront of the n Renaissance, led by Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein the Younger. This was a golden age for German painting and, although Caspar Friedrich made an important contribution to Romanticism, it was only in the 20th century that expressionism and Bauhaus achieved comparable status.
