British physicist who designed the radar. The device known as the cavity magnetron had a powerful output of centimeter-waves that allowed for the necessary preciseness. This innovative invention is thought to have influenced the outcome of World War II. The radar enabled a precise beam and small lightweight transmitters to be used especially at night on bomber planes. In 1945 Boot began working in the emerging field of nuclear physics, where he helped to design the cyclotron and the magnetron.
