lake forest A forest dominated by conifers, which occurs in the eastern half of North America, in Minnesota, Michigan, northern Pennsylvania, southern Ontario, and northern New England. Although a distinct formation it is in many respects transitional between boreal coniferous forest and southern deciduous forest. Very little lake forest survives, having been cut in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
