Porcelijn, David , Dutch conductor, teacher, and composer; b. Achtkarspelen, Jan. 7, 1947. He was a student of Vester (flute) and of Baaren and Vlijmen (composition) at the Royal Cons. of Music in The Hague, where he took the prize for composition in 1972. He then studied conducting, composition, and theory with Tabachnik in Geneva (1972–74). In 1972 he became a conductor of the Ensemble M. He also was conductor of the Radio Blazers Ensemble (1973–77), the Gewestelijk Orkest voor Zuid-Holland (1977–82), and the Nederlands Danstheater (1977–86). From 1974 to 1978 he taught at the Rotterdam Cons., and then at the Utrecht Cons. from 1984. In 1993 he became conductor of the Adelaide Sym. Orch. in Australia. From 1996 to 1998 he was conductor of the Noordhollands Phil. Porcelijn composed a number of orch. and chamber works along avant-garde lines.
