Statkowski, Roman, Polish composer and pedagogue; b. Szczpiorna, Jan. 5, 1860; d. Warsaw, Nov. 12, 1925. He studied law at the Univ. of Warsaw, graduating i n 1866. He received instruction in music from Zeleński at the Warsaw Music Inst. and then was a pupil of Soloviev (composition) and Rimsky-Korsakov (orchestration) at the St. Petersburg Cons., graduating in 1890. After teaching in Kiev, he became a prof. at the Warsaw Cons. in 1904. He was founder-ed. of the Kwartalnik muzyczny (from 1911). His style represents a blend of German and Russian influences. He wrote the operas Filenis (1897; Warsaw, Sept. 14, 1904; won first prize at the London International Opera Contest, 1903) and Maria (1903–04; Warsaw, March 1, 1906), as well as Polonaise for Orch. (1900), Symphonic Fantasy (1900), 5 string quartets, and many solo piano works.
