University of California, Los Angeles was founded in 1919. It is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It first offered distance learning courses in 1996. In fall 2003, there were 2,500 students enrolled in distance learning courses. Institutionally administered financial aid is available to distance learners.

The dynamic interface between the knowledge of the academy and the knowledge generated in the world of practice has enabled UCLA Extension to serve adult learners in uniquely effective ways for more than eight decades. Today, Extension counts about 100,000 enrollments in 4,500 courses held in more than 50 locations in southern California.

UCLA Extension Online continues in the same creative tradition established by its face-to-face learning community by serving thousands of individuals from all over the U.S. and from 80 countries. Participants in its certified programs and in more than 200 individual courses experience an intimate and in-depth learning environment online. All courses are instructor-led, and all participants belong to a cohort of learners, in which lively discussions and networking set the standard for effective adult education.

Instructors are drawn from all over the world, experts in their fields by virtue of a combination of practice and academic credentials. All instructors are required to complete an extensive training program before they teach an online class, and all students receive an orientation to the software platform in which their classes reside.
