William Paul Thurston

1946-

American mathematician who received his Ph.D. in 1972 from the University of California at Berkeley. After completing his Ph.D. he taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University. In 1982 he was a recipient of the Fields Medal for his work that revolutionized the study of topology in 2 and 3 dimensions and brought a new dialogue between analysis, topology, and geometry.
